How does scoring work in soccer?

Updated October 2026 · How we answer

Short answerIn soccer, a goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line between the posts and under the crossbar. Each goal counts as one point, and the team with more goals at the end wins.

Scoring a Goal

A goal is scored when the ball fully crosses the goal line, between the goalposts and under the crossbar, without any violation. Only the goalkeeper can handle the ball with their hands, and only inside the penalty area.

Goals can be scored from open play, set pieces (free kicks, corners, penalties), or own goals (when a player accidentally scores for the opposing team).

  • Ball must fully cross the line
  • Only goalkeepers can use hands in their penalty area
  • Goals count as one point each

Winning the Game

The team that scores more goals wins. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, the match can end in a draw, or in knockout competitions, extra time and penalty shootouts may decide the winner.

In league play, a win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point, and a loss 0 points. This system encourages attacking play.

  • Win = 3 points, Draw = 1 point, Loss = 0 points
  • Tie games possible in league play
  • Knockout games may go to extra time and penalties

Common mistakes

  • Some think a goal counts only if the ball is caught by the net, but it just needs to cross the line.
  • People sometimes believe a penalty kick is worth 2 points, but it's still 1 goal.
  • In soccer, there's no such thing as a 2-point or 3-point goal; all goals are 1 point.
